St. Johns River Youth Football Conference Jamboree

  • Hosted by the Middleburg Athletic Association at Middleburg High School, nearly 70 football teams from the American Youth Football League converged and played from sunrise to sundown in 15 minutes quarters. The SJRYFC teams playing will be Middleburg Broncos, PAL Packers, Oakleaf Knights, Villages Panthers, Mandarin Hurricanes, West Augustine Jackets, Ponte Vedra Lions and the South Menendez Junior Falcons.

Durbin Creek Wilderness Society at the Bartram Canoe Trail

  • Two citizens decide to make a difference, one creek at a time. Eric Bersinger and Josh Woods, coworkers at Jacksonville's Ruth Chris Steak House and Mandarin/Julington Creek residents, found a common interest in kayaking and preserving our natural areas. Both members of the St. Johns Riverkeeper organization, the two founded the Durbin Creek Wilderness Society for the purpose of cleaning and maintaining the Bartram Canoe Trail, located on the westermost point of the Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve. Their plan is to engage other citizen activists to adopt our waterways in a similar fashion.

Solo Swim across the St. Johns River

  • Jim Alabiso, 56, an open-water and competitive swimmer, successfully completed a 3.5 mile solo swim across the St. Johns River on July 17, 2011, to raise awareness for the St. Johns, the Riverkeeper and the proposed Georgia-Pacific pipeline. The swim started at Fleming Island Marina in Clay County, finished at the County Dock in Mandarin, and was sponsored by JumpingFish, the St. Johns Riverkeeper and supported by a variety of volunteers and local businesses. Jim Alabiso created JumpingFish as an outgrowth of his life experiences as a business consultant, father, athlete, musician, lifeguard, software developer, caregiver, animation artist, SCUBA diver, teacher, swim coach and surgery patient, and the company provides coaching for mind, body and work.

Save Cross Country 5K

  • On July 2, 2011, fans of cross country running from across the northeast Florida region traveled to Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County to raise funds to keep their sport alive at the high school level in Duval County. Sponsored by Doug and Jane Alred of 1st Place Sports, all proceeds from the event will go to the 17 high schools in the Jacksonville area in danger of losing "the sport you don't play," as the slogan read on wrist bands of the competitors. The event raised over five thousand dollars toward the preservation of cross county in Duval County high schools. High school cross country teams represented included Bartram Trail, Creekside, Fleming Island, Lee, White, Sandalwood, Stanton, Baldwin, Nease and Mandarin. Some of the most excited to finish were Micah Drum, 13 (932) Matthew Taylor (749) and Gabriel Moran, 12 (702).

The Mandarin Store and Post Office Centennial Celebration

The St. Augustine Wild Reserve

The "St. Augustine Wild Reserve" assists Florida Fish and Wildlife by caring for animals that have been confiscated or surrendered by their former owners. The "St. Augustine Wild Reserve" has over 80 different animals in it's sanctuary for you to observe up-close and personal. Two hour guided tours are available for single person or groups with trained professionals. You will see lions, Siberian tigers, black leopards, wolves, bobcats. The tour is very educational as well, one can learn about the behavior of the animals and the story behind each one.

As described in the Duval County Schools website, Virtual Education, Cyber Education, On-line Education, E-Learning, Mobile Learning, and Distance Learning, are all terms used to describe the same entity. Virtual education is best described as a learning opportunity where the student and the educator are separate from one another by space, time, and often both. The students work through the curriculum at various times and locations.

  • Mandarin makes the final four for the first time since 2008 with a 4-1 victory over Flagler Palm Coast in the Region 1 6A quarterfinal game played at Mandarin High School on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Pitcher Riley Carter (15) held the Lady Bulldogs of Flagler Palm Coast to one hit until the final inning, when the Flagler girls scored their sole run of the game. Mandarin senior Ashlee Ellen's (18) home run in the third inning took the Mustangs to their four-run total for the game. Mandarin will go on the road to Deland for the next game in the state championship series.

It was a defensive battle up to the fifth inning, when the Mustangs rallied with four runs, which proved to be the only scores of the game. The off and on rain extended the competition, but several area athletes will move on to the Region 2 1A meet, scheduled for Thursday, April 21, 2011 at First Academy in Orlando, Florida.

  • In a District 1 6A battle, Mandarin held off the attack of the Orange Park Raiders with a final score of 7-6 on Friday, April 8, 2011. Orange Park scored first on the Mandarin home field, but the Mustangs immediately answered back, taking the score to 4-1 by the end of the fourth inning. A four run rally by the Raiders in the seventh led to a 6-6 score and an extra inning, with the Mustangs scoring in the eighth to take the game.

Mustangs Outlast Bears 3-1: MHS Tanner Settles 2RBIs in 7th

  • After tying the host Bartram Trail Bears baseball team, the Mandarin Mustangs got key hits in the sixth and seventh innings to win 3-1 Tuesday night. Bartram Trail scored first with Nick Smith hitting an RBI single to score Joe Davidson in the third inning. Both teams went scoreless until the seventh after Mandarin left two runners on base in the sixth after Spencer Harmon's RBI single tied the game. In the seventh, a 2-RBI single by Tanner Settles iced the game for the Mustangs. Mandarin improved to 9-4.

Mayor's Commission Celebrates Women's History Month

  • The Mayors Commission on the Status of Women in partnership with the University of North Florida Thomas G. Carpenter Library presented their annual honor of women who have made an impact on our community. The 2011 honorees were selected from a group of nominations from the community for their contributions of lasting value to the community and were featured on the Womens History Month poster. This years poster women were Debbie Buckland, executive vice president and Line of Business manager, SunTrust Bank; Barbara Harrell, immediate past president, Womens Giving Alliance; Keri Kidder, senior business analyst/vice president, Citi - Communications Chair for the Citi Pride Network and a member of the Citi Womens Network and Dr. Shahla Masood, professor and chair, Department of Pathology for University of Floridas College of Medicine, Jacksonville; medical director, Shands Jacksonville Breast Health Center; chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Shands Jacksonville Each of these women have contributed to the fabric of Jacksonville in different ways, and their contributions to their community were celebrated at the event. The 2011 poster will be added to the Thomas G. Carpenter Library collection of Womens History Month posters.

  • From hand crankers to muscle cars, there was vehicular glory for all to revel in at the Olde Florida Cafe third annual car show at the Avonlea Antique Mall on Saturday, March 5, 2011. Fans were able to vote for the best in show and enjoy barbecue provided by the Old Florida Cafe. Cheryl Corrado, Mandarin resident and proprietor of the cafe, was the master of ceremonies. Music and entertainment was provided by the Sunshine State Chevelles.

Fletcher vs. Mandarin High School Varsity Baseball

  • There was quality high school varsity baseball competition under the Friday night lights as the Fletcher High School Senators traveled to Mandarin High on March 4, 2011. The Mustangs held Fletcher scoreless until the Senators rallied with six runs in the sixth inning; but Mandarin went on to capture the win 8 to 6, improving Mandarin's season to 7-1.

Mandarin vs Atlantic Coast HS Varsity Boys Basketball

  • The Mandarin Mustangs managed to hold on to their winning season playing a Monday night game at Atlantic Coast High School on January 31, 2011. The Mustangs came out strong in the first period overwhelming the Atlantic Coast Stingrays 25-7. Atlantic Coast outscored Mandarin in the second period, and kept the scores tight in the final half of the game, but were not able to overcome the first period deficit with a final score of 75-55.

Gateway Conference Wrestling Tourney

  • Fletcher High hosted the "Gateway Conference For Wrestling" on Saturday at Fletcher Gym, with a huge crowd of fans cheering on. Most of Duval County high schools participated. Semi finals were held Saturday morning. Winners from the morning session advanced to the finals Saturday night. Some of the schools that made it to the finals were Fletcher, Stanton, Raines, Terry Parker Andrew Jackson, Mandarin and many more. Emotions ran high from the crowd, coaches and wrestlers as macthes progressed towards end of the night.

Resolution Run 5km and Kids One Miler

  • On River Road in Orange Park, the Resolution Run 5km was one of the new year's first 1st Place Sports Grand Prix races with nearly 900 runners participating. Nearly 1500 photos were taken by Jacksonville.com Photographer Randy Lefko. Race winners were Tallahassee's Gary Droze, 49, in 16 minutes and 48 seconds and Michelle Krueger, 35, of Jacksonville, in 18:19. Palatka's John Wisker was master's winner with Sue O'Malley of Port Orange the women's masters champ. More photos will be added Saturday and Sunday.

Mandarin Christian vs Bolles MS Boys Soccer

2010 Florida Cross Country Championships

  • Teams and individuals runners from all over north Florida competed in championships for state titles at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City with Creekside High's Jimmy Clark bringing home a 3A state title. Mandarin's Mary Jane Ponder got 5th in Class 4A. Mandarin's Eduardo Garcia was third in Class 4A race. Ridgeview senior Kayla Vinson got 23rd in Class 3A. Bolles' Rebecca Chandler was fourth in Class 2A race. Nease boys got two boys in top ten with MacKenzie Reynolds at fifth and John Roach in 10th in Class 2A race. Danial Van Lier of Providence was eighth in Class 1A. Providence's Joshua Karadeema was top area finisher in Class 1A at 33rd place. Nease and Bishop Kenny boys finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in Class 2A. Bolles girls finished second with Bishop Kenny seventh in Class 2A. Providence's girls finished third in Class 1A with St. Johns Country Day School finishing in seventh.

Andrew Turner Memorial Track Meet

Physically impaired students from Mandarin Oaks, Sabal Palm Love Grove, Biltmore Biscayne and Westview Elementary Schools participated in a mutil-event track meet. There was runnung, frisbee toss, footbball throw and bean bag toss.

Mandarin vs. Wolfson

  • Winning the final game of their season 35-24, the Mandarin Mustangs prevailed over southside rival Wolfson on Wednesday night, November 10, 2010. Three interceptions by the Mandarin defense kept the ball in the hands of the Mustangs for much of the evening, and Mandarin quarterback Brandon Luke threw for over a hundred yards. The Wolfpack finished up the year at 2-8; Mandarin at 4-6.

Raiders Roll Over Mustangs 50-0

  • With 29 first quarter points, the Orange Park Raiders rolled to a 50-0 district 6A-1 win over visiting Mandarin High Friday night. The Raiders are now 2-0 in district play with Sandalwood and Ocala Forest, both with one loss, left on the schedule. The Raiders got a 54 yard TD run from running back Karl Barrs on the second play of the game. The Raider defense got two points on a safety, before Barrs rambled 68 yards on the ensuing kickoff to put the Raiders up 15-0 with nearly nine minutes still on the clock.

  • Senior Kyle Seigler, quarterback for the White Commanders, was the driving force in the decisive win against Mandarin on the Mustang home turf. Allowing no rushing yards or score from the Mandarin team in the first half, the Commanders were able to keep the potential second half comeback attempt by the Mustangs to two touchdowns, and added to their tally for a final score of 34-13.

  • Ocala Forest, one of the four teams in District 1-6A prep football, won the first of their conference games against Mandarin High School in Jacksonville. A score by the visiting Wildcats right before halftime gave momentum to the Ocala team, and the Mustangs were not able to catch up, only scoring once in each half.   • Benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Jacksonville, and hosted by the Children's Cancer Cooperative and 1st Place Sports, was the 3rd race of a Grand Prix series. There was a 5k, 1 mile fun run and a "Tot Trot" run around the block for younger kids. The Family Festival was sponsored by "The Zimmerman Family" which had Arts & Crafts, Face Painting, Food, Safety Education and of course "Ronald McDonald".

Mandarin vs Fletcher

  • It was a bad moon rising for Mandarin as they went head to head with Fletcher. The undefeated Mandarin was beaten by Fletcher 35-17. Both teams had some hard hits, but it was Fletcher that came out with the win.

Dupont vs. Mandarin Middle School Football

  • The Dragons of Dupont clashed with the Mandarin Middle Hawks, taking an early lead in the first quarter. At halftime, the Hawks had pulled within six points of catching the Dragons. Mandarin Middle quarterback Sammy Murray takes a snap here, but Dupont offense reigned in the final half of the game, with the final score Dupont leading 32-18.

Avondale 5K and one mile Fun Run

  • Benefiting the "Boselli Foundation", 1st Place Sports, along with the Avondale Merchant's Association, hosted the "Avondale 5K and 1 mile Fun Run. Running through Jacksonville’s historic Avondale district. The course runs around Boone Park and along St. Johns Ave. Music was provided by Bay street band and the Shops at Avondale provided the food after the race. After the race, the party started in a block party style as the streets were close to traffic.

Mandarin vs. Englewood JV Football

  • In a junior varsity game on Thursday, September 16, 2010, the Mandarin Mustangs met the Englewood Rams on the southside field and prevailed in a 51-0 shutout. The Rams played tough throughout the evening and should improve through the experience with the strong Mustang defense.
