Rain did not dampen the crowd spirit for the Kickoff Classic game pitting the Bartram Trail Bears against the Mandarin Mustangs. The visiting Bears prevailed 16-0 at the Mustangs home field, both teams having problems with fumbles and turnovers.

Tyler Southern's Homecoming

Corporal Tyler Southern returned to his Mandarin home Friday afternoon, welcomed by throngs of his friends and neighbors. He rode in a motorcycle sidecar wearing his desert fatigues accompanied by motorcyclists from veterans, police and other patriot groups in the motorcade. Seriously injured by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, Tyler has spent the last few months at Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland recuperating from his wounds. He returned home for his birthday which is on Sunday, August 22.

Shadco Safety Fair

The Shadco Safety Fair took place at the Avenues Mall on August 7th. Visitors enjoyed many informative displays from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Children especially enjoyed a close up look at mounted units, police cars, SWAT vans, fire and rescue vehicles and Shands Hospital's Trauma One helicopter.

UNF Aquatics Center Youth Swim Programs

The festive event took place at Christ's Church in Mandarin and featured a Family Fun Zone with Inflatables, Rock Climbing Wall, Pony Rides, Dunking Booth and more. Skate of Emergency, a double header at The Jax Ice & Sports Plex located at 3605 Phillips Hwy. The Duval Derby Dames were defeated by the Jail Break Betties from Tallahassee, while New Jax City was victorious over Tallahassee's Capital Punishment 119 -84. This is the first time that a Jacksonville Roller Girl team has beaten Tallahassee.

Mandarin fell 4-1 to visiting Orlando Timber Creek, ending the Mustangs' run at the state title. Despite the tough loss, the Mandarin team can take pride in going deeper into the playoffs than any prior team in the school's history.
